In this article, I will show you how to add Twitch chat to OBS.

Before we get started, you will need to make sure that you have the following:

  • A Twitch account
  • OBS Studio installed on your computer
  • The latest version of Java installed

Now that you have everything you need let’s get started!

How to Add Twitch Chat to OBS Step 1: Choose the Widget Type

The first thing you need to do is open Twitch, log into your Twitch channel, and go to your dashboard.

Once you are on your dashboard, look for the “Widgets” tab and click on it.

This will bring up a list of all the different types of widgets that you can add to your stream.

I will be using the “Chat Box” widget for this guide.

Step 2: Customize the Widget

Now that you have chosen the widget type, it’s time to adjust it to your liking.

To do this, click on the “Edit” button next to the widget.

This will bring up a new page with many different options that you can customize.

The first thing you need to do is give your widget a title.

For this example, I will be using “My Twitch Chat.”

After giving your widget a title, scroll down and look for the “Appearance” section.

In this section, you can customize your widget’s size, color, and position.

Once you are happy with how your widget looks, scroll down to the “Behavior” section.

Now, you will need to choose whether you want your chat to be embedded in your stream or not.

If you do not want your chat to be embedded, then you can leave the “Embed Chat” option disabled.

However, if you want your chat to be embedded, you will need to enable the “Embed Chat” option and choose a channel from the drop-down menu.

Don’t forget to click on the “Save Settings” button before proceeding to the next step.

Step 3: Add Stream Chat to OBS

Now that you have customized your widget, it’s time to add it to OBS.

To do this, go back to your dashboard and click on the “Get Widget” button.

This will bring up a new browser window with many different options that you can choose from.

For this guide, I will be using the “HTML” option.

Once you have chosen the “HTML” option, click on the “Copy Code” button.

Now, launch OBS and choose “Add source” by clicking the “+” button.

This will bring up a new window with a list of different types of sources that you can add to your stream.

For this guide, I will be using the “Browser” source to add the chat box overlay.

After you have added the new “Browser” source, a new window will pop up.

You will need to paste the widget URL that you copied earlier into the “URL” box in this window.

Once you have done that, click on the “OK” button.

You should now see your stream chat box and messages in OBS!

How to Add a Popout Chat

If you want to take your chat to the next level, you can add a popout chat.

A popout chat is a separate browser window that displays your stream chat.

This allows easier chat moderation while streaming.

adding popout chat in OBS

To add the popout or popup chat, open OBS Studio and go to the View tab, select “Custom Browser Docks,” and then “Chat.”

Enter the Dock name and paste the URL below into the first empty box. Then click “Apply” and close the window.

The new chat window will appear on your screen. You can resize and position the stream chat window by clicking on the “X” button.

Twitch stream chat will be layered over the OBS Stream, allowing you to drag and resize it as you wish.

How to Add Streamlabs Chat Box

Unlike OBS Studio, SLOBS has its own chat feature that you can adjust to your liking.

For example, you can choose the font size to match your Twitch name and brand or add a transparent background so that the dockable window and messages are not blocking the gameplay on the screen.

If you are using Streamlabs OBS as a streaming service, once you have a made stream chat box widget, adding it to SLOBS is super simple.

The process is similar to the one described for the OBS Studio.

Just tap the “+” icon to add Twitch chat to SLOBS.

Then choose the Chat Box option, name the widget, choose “Add existing source,” and enter the URL link.

Move the Twitch chat overlay to position it, and type something in the Twitch chat box to test it out.

How to Add Facebook Gaming Chat

Facebook Gaming doesn’t feature a chat overlay, so you will have to use a plugin for OBS Studio to integrate the chat section.

The plugin that I recommend is the Streamlabs OBS Live plugin that works with Facebook Gaming and YouTube.

Facebook gaming partner

It is a free feature, with many other features like music controls, and installation is super easy.

Once it is installed, it will automatically pull the chat window, so you can just log in to your Facebook or YouTube account and start a live stream.

Conclusion
