Quick answer for streamers: open Twitch's Creator Dashboard, choose Content → Video Producer, open the three-dot menu beside your VOD, and select Download. Do this before Twitch's retention window expires. Twitch does not provide viewers with an official button to download another creator's full VOD.

This guide was rewritten in July 2026 using Twitch's current Video on Demand documentation. The old version centered on third-party downloader sites; the safer first choice is Twitch's own Video Producer for content you own.

How to download your own Twitch VOD

  1. Sign in to Twitch in a desktop browser.
  2. Open your profile menu and select Creator Dashboard.
  3. In the left navigation, open Content and select Video Producer.
  4. Find the Past Broadcast, Highlight, or Upload you want to save.
  5. Select the three vertical dots beside that video.
  6. Choose Download.
  7. Keep the browser open while Twitch prepares the file. A long broadcast may take time before the download begins.

Twitch documents these steps in its Video on Demand guide. The download belongs on a drive with enough free space; multi-hour broadcasts can be large.

Turn on VOD storage before your next stream

If Store past broadcasts was off when you went live, Twitch may have no VOD to download afterward.

  1. Open Creator Dashboard.
  2. Go to Settings → Stream.
  3. Find the VOD settings section.
  4. Turn on Store past broadcasts.
  5. Review Always Publish VODs and excluded-category settings based on whether you want recordings public automatically.

Local recording is still the safer archive. In OBS, record a clean local copy while streaming so a network failure, muted VOD, or expired Twitch recording does not become your only copy.

Twitch says a dual-format or vertical VOD's vertical version expires after seven days, after which the horizontal version remains for the rest of the account's normal retention period. Twitch also says a 2K-quality VOD version expires after seven days and the 1080p version remains for the rest of the normal period.

Retention rules can change, so confirm the current table in Twitch Help rather than waiting until the last day.

Export a Twitch VOD directly to YouTube

If the goal is a durable online archive, Twitch can export your video directly to a connected YouTube account:

  1. Connect Twitch to the intended YouTube account from Twitch's Connections settings.
  2. Return to Content → Video Producer.
  3. Open the three-dot menu for the video and select Export.
  4. Choose the YouTube title, description, tags, and privacy setting.
  5. Start the export and verify the finished video on YouTube.

Verify the YouTube account if you need to upload a video longer than YouTube's standard 15-minute limit. Do not treat an export as your only backup: platform accounts and videos can still be removed.

Can you download someone else's Twitch VOD?

Twitch's official download control is for videos available through the creator's Video Producer. Viewers can watch and share published VODs, but Twitch does not offer them a full-VOD download button.

Before saving or republishing another person's broadcast, get the creator's permission and check the rights for music, game footage, guest appearances, and other included material. A publicly viewable video is not automatically licensed for reuploading.

If you need a short moment, use Twitch's clipping tools where available and share the Twitch link. If you are an editor working for the channel, ask the broadcaster to assign the appropriate Twitch role; Twitch says editors can help download, export, and manage eligible videos.

Why the Download option may be missing

The VOD has expired

Past Broadcasts disappear after the applicable 7-, 14-, or 60-day period. Twitch cannot download a VOD that is no longer stored in Video Producer.

Past-broadcast storage was disabled

The stream must be saved as a Past Broadcast first. Turn on storage before the next broadcast and record locally.

You do not control the channel

A viewer will not see the creator's Video Producer actions. Sign in to the correct broadcaster account or use an authorized editor role.

The video is still processing

A long stream can take time to prepare. Refresh Video Producer later, but do not wait until the retention deadline.

The downloaded VOD has muted audio

Twitch states that downloading a VOD muted by its Audio Recognition system does not restore the removed audio. Review the muted segments and use Twitch's appeal process only when you have the necessary rights.

Can you bulk-download Twitch VODs?

Twitch does not currently provide an official bulk-download action. It downloads or exports videos one at a time. Third-party utilities may automate the process, but they add account, malware, privacy, and maintenance risk.

If you evaluate a third-party tool, never give it your Twitch password, avoid unknown executable downloads, review whether it is actively maintained, and use it only for content you have the right to save. For an ongoing channel, automatic local recording is more dependable than periodic scraping.

A reliable Twitch archive workflow

  1. Enable Store past broadcasts.
  2. Record locally in OBS while live.
  3. After the stream, verify both the local file and Twitch VOD.
  4. Save the original recording to a second drive or cloud-storage provider.
  5. Export an edited or archival copy to YouTube when useful.
  6. Do not wait for Twitch's retention window to expire.

This approach gives you an editable master file, a short-term Twitch copy, and an optional published archive instead of depending on one platform.
