In this article, I will demonstrate how to add Twitch chat to OBS.

Before we begin, please ensure that you have the following:

  • A Twitch account
  • OBS Studio installed on your computer
  • The latest version of Java installed

Now that you have everything you need, let’s get started!

How to Add Twitch Chat to OBS Step 1: Choose the Widget Type

The first step is to open Twitch, log into your Twitch channel, and navigate to your dashboard.

Once you are on your dashboard, locate the “Widgets” tab and click on it.

This will display a list of all the various types of widgets that you can add to your stream.

I will use the “Chat Box” widget for this guide.

Step 2: Customize the Widget

Now that you have selected the widget type, it’s time to customize it to your preference.

To accomplish this, click the “Edit” button located next to the widget.

This will open a new page with various options that you can customize.

The first step is to assign a title to your widget.

In this example, I will use “My Twitch Chat.”

After assigning a title to your widget, scroll down to find the “Appearance” section.

In this section, you can customize the size, color, and position of your widget.

Once you are satisfied with the appearance of your widget, scroll down to the “Behavior” section.

Now, you need to decide whether you want your chat to be embedded in your stream.

If you do not wish to have your chat embedded, you can keep the “Embed Chat” option disabled.

However, to embed your chat, you must enable the “Embed Chat” option and select a channel from the drop-down menu.

Remember to click the “Save Settings” button before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Add Stream Chat to OBS

Now that you have customized your widget, it’s time to add it to OBS.

To accomplish this, return to your dashboard and click the “Get Widget” button.

This will open a new browser window with various options for you to choose from.

In this guide, I will use the “HTML” option.

After selecting the “HTML” option, click the “Copy Code” button.

Now, launch OBS and select “Add source” by clicking the “+” button.

This will open a new window displaying a list of various types of sources that you can add to your stream.

In this guide, I will use the “Browser” source to add the chat box overlay.

Once you have added the new “Browser” source, a new window will appear.

Please paste the widget URL you copied earlier into the “URL” box in this window.

After completing that step, click the “OK” button.

You should now see your stream chat box and messages displayed in OBS!

How to Add a Popout Chat

If you want to elevate your chat experience, you can add a popout chat.

A popout chat is a distinct browser window that shows your stream chat.

This facilitates easier chat moderation during streaming.

adding popout chat in OBS

To add the popout or popup chat, open OBS Studio, navigate to the View tab, select “Custom Browser Docks,” and then choose “Chat.”

Enter the Dock name and paste the URL into the first empty box below. Then click “Apply” and close the window.

The new chat window will appear on your screen. You can resize and reposition the stream chat window by clicking the “X” button.

The Twitch stream chat will be overlaid on the OBS Stream, enabling you to drag and resize it as desired.

How to Add Streamlabs Chat Box

In contrast to OBS Studio, SLOBS includes its own chat feature, which you can customize to your preferences.

For instance, you can select the font size to align with your Twitch name and brand, or you can add a transparent background to ensure that the dockable window and messages do not obstruct the gameplay on the screen.

If you are using Streamlabs OBS as your streaming service, adding a stream chat box widget to SLOBS is very easy once you have created it.

The process is akin to that described for OBS Studio.

Simply tap the “+” icon to add Twitch chat to SLOBS.

Next, select the Chat Box option, name the widget, choose “Add existing source,” and input the URL link.

Position the Twitch chat overlay and type a message in the Twitch chat box to test it.

How to Add Facebook Gaming Chat

Facebook Gaming does not include a chat overlay, so you will need to use a plugin for OBS Studio to incorporate the chat section.

I recommend the Streamlabs OBS Live plugin, which is compatible with Facebook Gaming and YouTube.

Facebook gaming partner

It is a free feature that includes many others, such as music controls, and installation is very easy.

Once installed, it will automatically open the chat window, allowing you to log in to your Facebook or YouTube account and start a live stream.

Conclusion

I hope this guide was helpful and that you successfully added stream chat to OBS.
