Quick answer: Use Instagram or Meta's own controls for content you own: save a post inside Instagram for later viewing, download your Instagram information through Accounts Center, or transfer your photos and videos to a supported service. Do not give an unknown downloader your Instagram password, session cookie, or access token, and do not download or republish somebody else's video without permission.

This article was substantially rewritten in July 2026. The old list of downloader apps was removed because such sites change domains, copy content without clear permission, and create recurring privacy, copyright, and malware risks.

Save a post inside Instagram

Instagram's save/bookmark control keeps a reference in your account so you can find the post again. It does not create a standalone video file and the item can disappear if the creator deletes it, makes it unavailable, or changes access.

Use this for inspiration or later viewing when you do not need an offline copy.

Download the Instagram content you own

  1. Open Instagram settings and go to Accounts Center.
  2. Find the control for downloading your information.
  3. Select the Instagram profile and the data categories you need.
  4. Choose date range, format, and media quality where offered.
  5. Send the export request and wait for Meta's notification.
  6. Download the archive from Accounts Center and store it securely.

Meta says Download Your Information and Access Your Information are centralized in Accounts Center. It also offers Transfer Your Information for moving Instagram photos and videos to supported services. See Meta's official information-management announcement.

Download your own Reel before publishing

When Instagram offers a device-save or download control in the creation workflow, use it before publishing. Music licensed only for use inside Instagram may be missing or muted in the exported file. Keep the original camera and editing project whenever possible; it preserves higher quality and avoids platform overlays.

Ask the creator for the original

If you need another person's video for an edit, reaction, article, ad, or compilation, request permission and ask for the original file. Agree on:

  • where it may be used;
  • whether editing is allowed;
  • credit and link requirements;
  • commercial versus non-commercial use;
  • music, artwork, people, or locations requiring separate rights.

A public Instagram post is not automatically public-domain content.

Why third-party downloaders are risky

  • They may log the URLs you submit.
  • Some copy the Instagram sign-in screen or request session cookies.
  • Advertising can include deceptive download buttons and notification prompts.
  • Downloaded files can be renamed or packaged with unwanted software.
  • The service may disappear, change ownership, or reuse submitted content.
  • Downloading may violate rights, privacy, or platform terms.

Never install a browser profile, certificate, “video codec,” or mobile configuration profile to download an Instagram video. Never paste code into browser developer tools at a stranger's instruction.

If you must evaluate a downloader

Use only for content you own or are authorized to save, and apply this minimum checklist:

  • No Instagram login, password, token, or cookie required
  • HTTPS and an established, exact domain
  • Clear privacy, retention, and deletion terms
  • No extension, executable, APK, or configuration profile
  • No notification permission or unrelated subscription
  • Downloaded file scanned and opened with current software

A website passing this checklist is not a legal opinion or permanent endorsement.

Quality and metadata

A copied Instagram delivery file may be recompressed, stripped of metadata, cropped, or lower quality than the creator's original. Downloading from the platform does not restore lost detail. For your own production, archive camera originals and project files separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can Instagram videos be downloaded officially?

Meta provides account information downloads and transfer tools for your own profile data, and Instagram may offer save/download controls in certain creation or viewing contexts. Availability varies by content, account, region, and current app version.

Is it legal to download an Instagram video?

That depends on ownership, permission, intended use, local law, and other rights such as music and privacy. Downloading a public post does not automatically grant republication rights.

Why does a downloaded Reel have no music?

Music may be licensed for use inside Instagram rather than distribution in an exported file. Use music you own or separately license for off-platform publishing.
