Twitch’s Payout Controversy: Did They Just Try to Sneak a $100 Threshold Past Users?

Published On:

Twitch is facing accusations of misleading its users.

This comes after a Twitch Help article was said to have “accidentally” changed to indicate a higher payout threshold.

On November 15, journalist Zach Bussey tweeted that a Twitch Help article was updated to say that payouts now began at $100.

This amount is double the previous limit of $50.

The new payout information was released without any notice to users about the change in rules.

In response, the Twitch Support account on X (formerly Twitter) quickly clarified that this was an error.

They stated that they were updating many articles and that this one had mistakenly reverted to an older version.

They assured users that the payout threshold had not actually changed, and they would correct the article soon.

Bussey expressed his disbelief regarding this explanation.

He insisted that he did not fully trust their statement, claiming he had records of all the changes made to the policy.

He pointed out that the new wording was not present in earlier versions.

He then shared screenshots of the article showing four different versions after it had been edited by Twitch.

Zach Bussey, a journalist, took to X to share his findings about a Twitch Help article that had seemingly been altered to reflect a new payout structure. He noted that the updated article stated payouts would now start at $100, which is double the previous threshold of $50.

This change was reportedly made without any announcement to users, causing immediate concern. The Twitch Support team on X quickly responded, clarifying that the article’s change was an error due to ongoing updates across their platform. They said the payout threshold had not changed and promised to rectify the documentation soon.

Despite this reassurance, Bussey remained skeptical. He expressed doubts about Twitch’s statement, indicating he had documented all previous changes to the payout policy. He claimed the language in the article was brand new and not present in past versions.

To back up his claims, he shared several screenshots showing the article in different formats over time, illustrating the edits and rewrites made to the content. The versions he shared spanned different time frames, showing how the payout information had evolved.

Another user on X, Dan Saltman, criticized Twitch for what he perceived as a lack of transparency in increasing the payout threshold without notification. He voiced that this maneuver seemed designed to disadvantage new streamers, highlighting the need for clear communication from Twitch’s leadership, specifically targeting CEO Daniel Clancy.

Saltman suggested that Twitch may have intended to implement the new payout rules quietly but backed down when the community began to notice. He described Twitch’s explanation as being too flippant to be credible, emphasizing that they could not be trusted.

As of now, neither Twitch nor Clancy has issued any further comments on the situation. The community is awaiting more clarification from the platform.
