Streamer Hasan Piker defended Twitch, stating the platform should not ban him for his political views.
Currently, Twitch is facing criticism due to various issues that gained the attention of politicians and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).
As a result of this scrutiny, some advertisers have halted their ad spending on the platform.
This controversy began when Hasan showed a video about the Houthi Movement to fellow streamer Nmp.
Following this, viewers expressed significant backlash.
The Houthi group is identified as a Terrorist Organization by the US State Department.
Additionally, Twitch’s CEO, Dan Clancy, received requests from Democratic Representative Ritchie Torres to take action against content that promotes antisemitism, which included Hasan’s streams.
In an interview with Fox News, Hasan spoke about the criticisms directed at Twitch’s moderation.
He stated that he maintains a positive rapport with both the platform and its staff.
Hasan emphasized that short clips taken out of context from his long streams misrepresent his views.
He believes that Twitch’s Trust and Safety team does a good job maintaining a high standard for moderation to prevent hate speech.
Furthermore, he mentioned that it’s regrettable that some people misinterpret his content to fit a narrative that does not reflect his actual values.
Hasan received a warning from Twitch after broadcasting the video related to the Houthi Movement. Despite this warning, criticism of both him and the platform has persisted, even as they attempted to reach out to the ADL and other advertisers.
Dan Clancy, the CEO of Twitch, has also been criticized in this situation. To address the allegations of antisemitism, he issued a statement reaffirming that Twitch stands firmly against any form of hate and harassment.
To provide viewers more control, Twitch has introduced a new labeling system for content that is political or sensitive. This allows users to opt out of seeing such content or having their ads displayed alongside it.
In light of mounting pressure from the ADL, Twitch has recently prohibited the use of the term “Zionist” in a way that targets or demeans any individual or group based on their background or beliefs, interpreting such usage as a violation of their guidelines.
These adjustments are taking place during a tense period for Twitch, as many are beginning to worry the platform is experiencing a so-called ‘adpocalypse.’ Some creators have reported a drastic decrease in their advertising revenue, claiming it has dropped by up to 90%.
